The Lewis and Clark Expedition
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark
Manifest Destiny! Heading West! Expanding into the great unknown!
The early 1800s were a time of reinvigorated exploration and expansion west of the Appalachian Mountains. America recently acquired a great deal of land from France with the Louisiana Purchase (which nearly doubled the country's size). Americans wanted to know what was out there! To do so, a number of expeditions were charged with researching and reporting their findings back to the government, and specifically to President Thomas Jefferson.
One of the most famous expeditions was a group called the Corps of Discovery, better-known today by the name that included their leaders' names: The Lewis and Clark Expedition. President Jefferson spent over $25,000 (equivalent to over $300,000 today) to fund their expedition.
The major motive behind the expedition was to make friendly contact with Indian groups that might be interested in trade. A second motive was to find the Northwest Passage, a water route across North America that explorers had been seeking ever since Columbus reached the Americas. From 1804-1806, the Corps of Discovery journeyed thousands of miles across America's great unknown, experiencing a geography known to only the Native Americans and the wildlife.
Today, you are transporting back to that time and place as we embark on our Lewis and Clark QR Scavenger Hunt!
