Go West, Young Man! (and Woman!)
The image above is the ACTUAL map drawn up by the members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Their expedition was an extremely long journey, spanning over 7,500 miles. Their trip officially began in what is present day St. Louis, Missouri. St. Louis is now referred to as the "Gateway to the West," because this is where Lewis and Clark started their journey. In total, the Lewis and Clark Expedition trekked through the land that would become many states and spent over 3 years doing so. |

Task: The Gateway
Below (on the LEFT) is a modern day political map that shows the route followed by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. As mentioned above, the expedition journeyed across land that would eventually make up 10 states. Since mapping the terrain was a key task in their expedition, you too will have to map the western lands. Your mission is to complete these tasks:

- Draw/copy the path that Lewis and Clark took.
- Label St. Louis on the map and write two sentences explaining why St. Louis was considered the gateway to the west.
- Label each modern-day state that Lewis and Clark would have explored on their expedition. (Of course they weren't states yet back then, but the map shows the outlines of the states as they exist today.)
